Charging VOLTA: on-device and external
Two charging modes, a 12W difference, and what to plug in for the fastest charge.
VOLTA has two charging modes: charge the battery while it's installed in the device, or remove the battery and charge it separately. The external method is faster.
On-device charging (24W)
- Connect the USB-C cable to the port on the base of VOLTA.
- Plug the other end into any USB-C power source.
- The OLED screen shows the current battery level and charging status.
This method draws up to 24W.
External battery charging (36W)
- Unscrew the base cap and remove the battery.
- Connect the USB-C cable directly to the port on the battery module.
- Plug the other end into any USB-C power source.
This method draws up to 36W, charging the battery noticeably faster.
Supported input speeds
VOLTA accepts USB-C fast charge inputs:
- 5V / 5A
- 9V / 3A
- 12V / 3A
A 12V/3A charger gives you the fastest charge in external mode. Lower-wattage chargers still work, just more slowly.
Full charge time
A full charge from empty takes about 1 hour under fast charging. Standard USB-C chargers may take longer.
Charging behavior
- The device can be used while charging (see the Pass-Through Charging article)
- The battery is safe to charge inside or outside the device
- Both methods deliver the same total capacity (5000mAh)
Best practice
Charge to 100% before each session. If the battery drops below 50%, we recommend charging before powering on. Below 50%, the device may shut down mid-session.
