Cleaning don'ts: what damages VOLTA
A short list of habits that will permanently damage your VOLTA.
A few habits will permanently damage VOLTA. None of them are obvious if you've cleaned other electronics before. Here's what to avoid.
Don't use water on the device body
The heating module, battery, and electronics inside VOLTA are not waterproof. Don't:
- Rinse the device under a tap
- Submerge any part of the device in water or cleaning solution
- Use a damp cloth that drips water into the chamber or charging port
- Run any part of VOLTA through a dishwasher
Don't use abrasive or caustic cleaners
This includes:
- Steel wool, scouring pads, or rough sponges
- Bleach or ammonia-based cleaners
- Acetone, nail polish remover, or strong solvents
- Oven cleaner
These will scratch the housing, damage the OLED screen coating, and degrade the heating elements. The metal brush included in the box is the right tool for any scrubbing the device needs.
Don't clean a hot device
Wait at least 30 minutes after a session before any cleaning. The top cap and heating chamber stay dangerously hot even when the screen is dark.
Don't deep clean with the battery installed
Always remove the battery before deep cleaning. This protects the contacts from accidental moisture and prevents accidental power-on.
Don't ignore the airflow channel
A clogged vent stem will tighten the draw and make sessions harder to pull. Use the stem brush at least weekly. If draw becomes restricted, see the Troubleshooting article on draw resistance.
If you've already done one of these
Stop using the device immediately. Submit a ticket with photos of any damage. We'll advise on whether the device is safe to continue using or whether it needs to be replaced.
