Draw resistance too tight or too loose
What too tight and too loose feel like, and what fixes each one.
Draw resistance is how much effort it takes to pull air through the hose. Too tight means you're working hard for thin clouds. Too loose means air rushes through without picking up enough vapor. Both have specific fixes.
Draw is too tight
Common causes, in order of likelihood:
1. Ventilation holes are blocked
Molasses can fall into the ventilation holes at the bottom of the Ceramic Bowl (Chamber). This is the most common cause.
- Power off and cool for 30 minutes
- Remove the top cap and the bowl
- Inspect the holes for residue and clear them with the Metal Brush
2. The liquid in your hookah base is too thick
If you're using anything other than plain water (ice slush, viscous additives), the airflow gets restricted. Replace with fresh cool water and try again.
3. The bowl is packed too tight
Repack with less density. The molasses should sit loosely, not be pressed down.
Draw is too loose
Common causes:
1. The mouthpiece isn't fully seated
Make sure your hose is fully connected to the hookah base. A loose mouthpiece lets air bypass the heating system.
2. There's an air leak in the hose or stem
Check every connection point on your hookah: hose to base, downstem to base, bowl adapter to top of base. Any gap is a leak.
3. The grommet is loose
If the silicone grommet between VOLTA and your hookah's bowl adapter is too small or worn, air will rush in around it. Swap to the larger grommet (16mm or 18mm) if needed.
What a good draw feels like
Slight resistance, enough that you feel the pull, but smooth and effortless. If you're putting in real effort to draw, it's too tight. If the hose pulls air like sucking on an open straw, it's too loose.

No smoke when I draw
Three common causes when no smoke comes through the hose. Run through these first.
Light is on but no smoke
VOLTA is heating but nothing's coming through. The cause is usually a blockage somewhere in the airway.
Burnt taste or weak flavor
Temperature is too high or too low. Dial in the right setting for your tobacco.
